| High-profile award for small-town Nebraska hospital |
| Four years ago, Saint Francis Medical Center in Grand Island, NE, faced an employee turnover rate of 22%. The hospital frequently diverted patients due to its inability to find enough staff.
"Panic set in," says Lee Elliott, vice president of HR. "We were becoming very concerned about the situation. We didn’t have adequate staff to provide competent care, and we’re not going to take a patient if we can’t provide competent care."
The hospital realized its staffing needs would become ever greater as Nebraska’s baby boomer population began to age and the hospital needed more staff to cater to the increased need for healthcare. At the same time, its own staff were aging and there were not enough healthcare workers coming into the system to replace retirees. |
