| Oncoplastic surgeons combine cancer and plastic surgery techniques for optimized patient care |
| Healthcare advances, at times, can lead medical staff members to make new technology privileging requests. At other times, it leads them to request new procedure privileges, as in the case of oncoplastic surgery. Although oncoplastic surgeons aren’t using new equipment or medical devices to provide patient care, they are moving in a new direction.
“Oncoplastic surgery is really an approach to how you take care of a breast patient,” says Gail Lebovic, MD, MA, FACS, director of women’s services for Cooper Clinic at Craig Ranch in McKinney, TX. “It’s really combining the principals of surgical oncology with principals of plastic and reconstructive surgery.” However, Lebovic says, oncoplastic surgery techniques are not limited to cancer surgeries; they can be used in all breast surgeries. |
