| Handle with care: No-lift environment mobilizes patients and keeps nurses injury-free |
| Nursing is a physically demanding profession, and the medical-surgical unit (med-surg) at Harris Methodist Fort Worth (TX) Hospital noticed its nurses were being affected by the strain. The unit began to see continual nurse back injuries, a high turnover, and low morale due to the daily physical demands nurses encounter when handling patients.
"In one quarter, we had three injuries and 11 nurse turnovers in the medical-surgical unit due to strenuous physical demand on the nurses from handling patients," says Marsha Dougherty, BSN, COHN-S, manager of employee health at Harris Methodist. |
