This week's tip: Stop resident abuse

The most frequent nursing home resident abusers are caregivers and family members, and it usually happens because they are overwhelmed by the problems of the elder. CNAs and other staff with direct contact with the residents should watch their stress levels to avoid an unplanned and unpleasant encounter with a resident.

Following are tips to help CNAs deal with a resident who is causing stress to the caregiver:

  • Make certain the resident is safe and then you leave the room.
  • Try to identify the exact cause your irritation. The cause may be the resident's behavior or your own level of stress.
  • Talk with your supervisor about the situation.
  • Try to find a solution to the situation.
  • If necessary, ask to be temporarily assigned to another resident.
  • Take steps to reduce your own stress and fatigue.
