Policy interpretation

When the resident communicates a desire to commit suicide, a licensed nurse should:

  • Request a social service consultation
  • Notify the attending physician
  • Request an order for a psychological consultation
  • Update the care plan and communicate the resident's intention to other staff, as appropriate
  • Review the MDS to determine whether a significant change assessment is necessary
  • Schedule the resident for review during the next care plan meeting
  • Notify the responsible party
