Security officers say they know the rules, but is patient information really safe?

Physicians can’t cure the common cold and the healthcare industry apparently can’t stop the common data breach, according to an April 29 article in CIO.com.

In a recent survey of 263 chief security officers and managers of IT and healthcare information, 75% gave themselves the highest score possible with respect to familiarity with HIPAA, the online publication reported.

Healthcare staff may say they know the rules, but the Health Information and Management Systems Society survey demonstrates that this doesn’t mean the information is safe, CIO.com reported. Attrition.org, a Web site that collects, disseminates and distributes information about computer security, reports that 21 of 101 breaches tracked to date this year occurred at healthcare organizations, according to the article.
