Avoid immobility with preventive care

Long-term care facility nurses must be acutely aware of the residents’ risk factors for developing complications of immobility. Reduce the risks by planning and implementing preventive care. Several basic measures can be employed to preserve mobility in most residents:

• Exercising as many joints as possible through active, active assisted (assistive), and passive motion
• Avoidance of restraints
• Ambulation programs, such as “walk to dine,” in which residents are assisted in walking from the dining room door to their tables, and sit in regular dining chairs with arms

This is an excerpt from HCPro's book The Long-Term Care Legal Desk Reference.
