GAO: Healthcare evacuations tie in better with federal planning
Published May 2008
Federal authorities have made strides in better preparing to help hospitals and nursing homes transport patients and residents during community disasters, a government watchdog agency said.
Last week, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) released an update to a Congressional committee about recommendations it made in 2006 to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Among the GAO’s observations:
- HHS and DHS have worked with state and local departments of health in hurricane-prone areas to determine gaps in resources for hospital and nursing home evacuations
- HHS has more work to do in specifically addressing how federal agencies will assist in nursing home evacuations
