Keeping nurses motivated to learn
Published May 2008
Whether you need to communicate a new protocol or policy, teach new skills, or inform nurses about concepts relating to the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®, it can be difficult to sustain people’s energy and motivation to learn. Helen Zsohar, PhD, RN, associate professor at the University of Utah’s College of Nursing in Salt Lake City, says one key is to offer nurses incentives that will keep them motivated.
“Answer the question, ‘What’s in it for me?’ and ‘How will I benefit?’” says Zsohar. “We are dealing with a ‘Me’ generation who wants to know what going through a session will do for them professionally.” So focus on incentives such as increased job satisfaction and potential for organizational advancement.
