Tip of the week: Ask open-ended questions during employee evaluations

HIM directors should ask open-ended questions to encourage dialogue during an employee evaluation, says Jackie Raymond, RHIA, HIM director at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. For example, employees at Brigham and Women’s Hospital complete a questionnaire one week before their evaluations. Questions include:

  • Do you receive feedback to guide your ongoing performance?
  • How do you prefer to communicate with your manager? Do you prefer e-mail, face-to-face meetings, or another method?
  • What about your job excites you?
  • What are the challenges you face as you perform your job-related responsibilities?
  • What are the three most important functions of your job?
