CMS releases proposed inpatient rule for 2009

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced this week its proposed rule for its hospital inpatient prospective payment system (IPPS) for fiscal year 2009.

According to the proposed rule, for fiscal year 2010, many additional new measures will be added to the existing measures hospitals are required to publicly report data on, bringing the total from 30 to 72 measures.

In addition, CMS is seeking under the proposed rule to expand the list of items the organization will not reimburse for if they occur while the patient is in the hospital. Currently this list stands at eight events; CMS has proposed an additional nine conditions.
