The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)

AAPC offers three certifications Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder-Hospital (CPC-H), or Certified Professional Coder-Payer (CPC-P) for medical coding. 36 CEUs are required every two years for single certification, 48 CEUs for dual certification, and 60 CEUs to maintain all three certifications.

Certified Professional Coder-Apprentice (CPC-A), Certified Professional Coder-Hospital-Apprentice (CPC-H-A), or Certified Professional Coder-Payer-Apprentice (CPC-P-A)
Those applicants who are successful in passing the certification examination, but have not met the required " two years of coding work experience", will be awarded the initial designation "CPC-A", "CPC-H-A", or "CPC-P-A". Individuals with these types of credentials are required to submit the annual membership renewal fee as well as 36 continuing education units (CEUs) every two years while completing the coding work experience requirement, and will receive a certificate from the AAPC for CPC, CPC-H, or CPC-P Apprentice.

Certified Coding Specialists (CCS) are professionals skilled in classifying medical data from patient records, generally in the hospital setting. To perform this task, they must possess expertise in the ICD-9-CM coding system and the surgery section within the CPT coding system.
Certified Coding Associate (CCA)  The CCA should be viewed as the starting point for an individual entering a new career as a coder.
Certified Coding Specialist Physician Based (CCS-P) has expertise in physician-based settings such as physician offices, group practices, multi-specialty clinics, or specialty centers. The individual has in-depth knowledge of the CPT coding system and familiarity with the ICD-9-CM and HCPCS Level II coding systems.
Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)  RHITs are health information technicians who ensure the quality of medical records by verifying their completeness, accuracy, and proper entry into computer systems. RHITs often specialize in coding diagnoses and procedures in patient records for reimbursement and research
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) (Baccallaureate-based) RHIAs are skilled in the collection, interpretation, and analysis of patient data.

Maintenance of Certification for CCS, CCS-P, CCA, RHIT: Completion of Acceptable CEUs During a Two-Year Period (Cycle)
Individuals with a minimum of one associate-based AHIMA credential must complete 20 CEUs. Every individual who obtains an AHIMA credential thereafter must complete an additional 10 CEUs, not to exceed 60 CEUs during the two-year cycle, plus an annual self-assessment for each coding credential. Each mandatory annual coding self-assessment is worth 5 CEUs. Individuals with a minimum of one baccalaureate-based AHIMA credential (RHIAs) must complete 30 CEUs. Eighty percent of all continuing education units must be earned within the HIM Domain. To receive credit, coding self-assessments must be completed annually and all other activities must be completed within the assigned cycle period. All cycles begin on January 1 and end on December 31 the following year.
