Understand the myth of the paperless record

Is a paperless medical record department truly possible? Architects who design new healthcare facilities frequently answer no when asked whether their blueprints typically include space for filing or storing paper records—or even an HIM department. Information technologists and clinicians acknowledge that EHR implementation will lead to direct data entry, online charting/results, and a seemingly paperless department. However, when reality hits—and it eventually will—it becomes apparent that paper documents will continue to exist in even the most automated environments.
