UK: One in 10 patients die from medical errors

The House of Commons Health Committee received news that 40,000 patients die every year from hospital errors, according to the Telegraph. Mistakes include incorrect operations, medications mistakes, patient falls, and instruments left inside patients after surgery. The figures come from Richard Thomason, a professor at Newscastle University’s Institute for Health and Society, who estimated the numbers after studying the problem. The National Patient Safety Agency estimates much lower numbers—according to them, 2,000 patients die a year from similar blunders. To read more, click here.
