CMS proposes payment for diagnoses reported with POA indicator U under certain circumstances

Editor's note: The following article went to press before CMS released its 2009 IPPS final rule. Correct assignment of discharge disposition codes (i.e., patient status codes) for inpatient admissions is essential for data quality. Correct discharge disposition assignment is especially important now that inpatient payment for certain CMS-designated conditions-those with a present-on-admission (POA) U (insufficient documentation) indicator-may depend on it.
