'Leaps' to safety include public reporting
Patient Safety Monitor (Briefings on Patient Safety), April 1, 2008
Computerized physician order entry (CPOE), intensivists, and evidence-based hospital referrals are all necessary standards for building a safer hospital environment, according to The Leapfrog Group, a nationwide organization created to increase safe and cost-efficient patient care in hospitals. Public reporting on these standards, says Leapfrog's former CEO Karen Linscott, is also a necessary part of creating that safer environment. "A community has a right to know," Linscott says, adding that hospitals can benefit just as much as its patients. Reporting to Leapfrog's online public survey, she says, can carry benefits such as good press, available benchmarking information, and possible reimbursement, depending on the healthcare plan.
