Take a closer look at expanded packaging for 2008

One of the most significant changes to the OPPS since its August 2000 inception occurred in November 2007 when CMS adopted expanded packaging. Understanding what packaging is and how it works is critical in order for providers to understand where they may see a financial effect in 2008. With the adoption of widespread packaging, CMS has fundamentally transformed the OPPS and is moving down a new path-one that resembles an episode- or encounter-based system. As a result of expanded packaging, CMS eliminated many separate APC payments that providers have received in the past.
