Every year, the government updates the ICD-9-CM codes we use to report illnesses. This year, effective October 1, ICD-9-CM introduces a bevy of new codes, including a new category for secondary diabetes mellitus and its complications.
Reporting these codes to specify the etiology of diabetes increases our patients’ illness severity in risk adjustment physician and hospital profiling algorithms.
