We've read a couple of online stories in recent weeks that brought up longtime concerns about surgical fire risks in hospitals:

  • Pennsylvania has noted 28 OR fires a year in the past three years, which statistically works out to one surgical fire for every 87,000 surgeries, The Boston Globe reported on Wednesday. Extrapolating that information nationally suggests that "there may be hundreds of such fires out of roughly 50 million inpatient and outpatient surgeries annually-not the 50 to 100 previously estimated by patient safety organizations," according to The Globe.
  • A patient at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Detroit suffered burns to her lungs, throat, and mouth after a flash fire occurred during a cauterizing procedure on October 28, the Associated Press reported.
