Hospitals are dealing with yet another large-scale disaster on home soil, this time in Southern California, where wildfires have destroyed 1,100 homes and forced almost 1 million people to evacuate.

Pomerado Hospital in Poway, CA, and adjacent Villa Pomerado skilled nursing facility evacuated on October 22, with more than 200 patients and residents relocated to other medical facilities, according to Palomar Pomerado Health. The health system posted updates for staff members at the affected facilities on its Web site.

Meanwhile, Mountains Community Hospital in Lake Arrowhead was in the process of evacuating on Tuesday, reported the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Prior escalating catastrophes prompted The Joint Commission to issue revised emergency management standards, which take effect on January 1, 2008. Platinum subscribers to the Hospital Safety Center can read more about the revisions by clicking here.
