In welcome news for hospitals, The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) announced that testing frequencies for smoke and fire dampers will extend from every four years to every six years starting on January 1, 2008.

The relaxed testing provisions reflect research by the American Society for Healthcare Engineering that indicated hospitals do well with damper maintenance and that such equipment is generally reliable.

Also, The Joint Commission will require facilities that install dampers or on after January 1, 2008, to test the items one year after installation.
