Worries about acquiring infections from dirty syringes have eye surgery patients seeking tests for hepatitis B, C, and HIV.

The Indiana State Board of Heath has discovered that Dr. Kamal Tiwari, an anesthesiologist at the Bloomington Surgery Center, was allegedly reusing syringes on patients during the past 27 months, according to an October 5 report by WLKY Channel 32, Louisville KY. Two patients out of the 250 tested so far are positive for hepatitis C.

Tiwari did not use dirty needles between patients, but did reuse syringes, an outdated technique, which could lead to contamination by bloodborne pathogens, says the Indiana State Board of Heath.

WLKY reports that Tiwari is no longer at the Bloomington Surgery Center but is still practicing while his license is under review.
