How one city marked National Preparedness Month
Emergency Management Alert, October 16, 2007
September was National Preparedness Month. How did your facility mark the occasion? In Nashville, employees of the office of emergency management participated in a nationwide effort to encourage Americans "to take simple steps to prepare at home, at work, and at school for possible emergencies. Our goal was to increase public awareness about the importance of preparing for emergencies-now, before they happen."
Here's what they did:
Gave away four all-hazards emergency alert radios to contest winners
Held preparedness workshops for area businesses
Made special emergency preparedness presentations to groups as varied as corporate officers, the Girl Scouts, and JR ROTC
Held community emergency preparedness classes at metro police precincts
Distributed seven public service announcements and ran them on a metro government access channel
Completed a full CERT class
Completed and posted emergency preparedness survey results on the city's Web site
The office also offered citizens guidance on finding speakers from the bureau, posted a calendar of events, and made accessible online emergency preparedness videos.
