Last week, the United States Postal Service (USPS) revised its capacity requirements for mailing medical waste. The postal service will now restrict medical professional packages classification to 35 lbs. The new weight limit will allow healthcare facilities to use containers capable of holding contaminated sharps receptacles and tie-closed bags of regulated medical waste when mailing to disposal sites. The change appeared in the September 25 Federal Register. Also, the USPS added a clarification on who could use the package classification: "Medical professional packages, while intended for use by small medical offices, are not limited to use by medical offices only."
