If done right, mixed occupancies present code advantages

When it comes to Life Safety Code compliance, it's important to remember that when you have a mixed occupancy in a healthcare building (e.g., a cafeteria, which is an assembly occupancy), two options exist:

  • Apply the most restrictive requirements of each occupancy (means of egress, construction, protection, etc.)
  • Separate the uses by appropriate construction and provide independent egress (thus eliminating the mixed occupancy)

The latter point offers the advantage of not having to enforce the more stringent healthcare occupancy requirements in those locations that can be classified as another occupancy, says fire protection consultant Joshua Elvove.

Elvove is one of the instructors of HCPro's new Life Safety Code Boot Camp--Hospital Version. If you need help navigating the code, there's still time to join us for our next boot camp, which takes place October 8-10 in Elgin, IL (outside of Chicago).
