On Wednesday, The Joint Commission posted proposed revisions to, and renumbering of, its EC standards as part of a six-week field review that is now open to comment from the industry.
The final standards, when approved, will go into effect in January 2009.
The following are among the highlights of the proposal:
- The emergency management standards have been removed from the EC chapter and are being proposed for their own chapter in the accreditation manual. That new emergency management chapter will undergo a future field review.
- Current standard EC.5.20, which requires compliance with the Life Safety Code and Statement of Conditions, will move to a new life safety chapter in the manual. It is unclear what other standards will be part of the new life safety chapter, as current fire safety standards EC.5.10, EC.5.30, EC.5.40, and EC.5.50 will remain in the revamped EC chapter.

Those of you who want to submit comments to The Joint Commission about the proposed revisions have until October 31, 2007, to do so.
