The Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Durham, NC, avoided a potentially bad situation when picric acid somehow leaked out of its container.
The acid can be explosive when coming into contact with air if the material has crystallized, as occurred at the VA Medical Center, a hospital spokesperson told The News & Observer in Raleigh.
A police chemical response team safely removed the container, which was in a storage building on the hospital campus, the newspaper reported. No one suffered injuries.
Picric acid is a common reagent used in medical laboratories.
