St. Paul hospital plans $24M emergency room expansion
Emergency Management Alert, September 17, 2007
With money from a planned bond sale and philanthropic donations, United Hospital in St. Paul, MN, will double the size of its emergency department in a $24 million expansion project.
"We're busting at the seams," Terri Dresen, an official with Allina Hospitals and Clinics, told the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal last week. "Most ER's are running at maximum capacity across the U.S., so this problem is not unique to us."
The upgrade will push the size of the unit from 17 rooms to 36.
The article quotes Dresen as saying that the hospital's current emergency facilities are designed to take about 22,000 patients a year. This year she said the hospital will "very likely see more than 44,000."
