Though healthcare occupations accounted for only 2% of total U.S. fatal occupational injuries, that still meant that 123 healthcare workers lost their lives while on the job in 2006.

In general, workplace fatalities decreased from 4.0 per 100,000 employees in 2005 to 3.9 per 100,000 employees in 2006. That is the lowest fatality rate since the Department of Labor began collecting data in 1992, according to an August 9 OSHA announcement.

"National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries in 2006" places healthcare twelfth among 15 U.S. industries. Within the healthcare industry, 55 (45%) fatalities occurred in ambulatory health care services.
