Tracer Methodology: The Environment of Care Tour

Emergency Management Alert, August 21, 2007

Since the introduction two years ago of tracer methodology, which now constitutes 60 to 80 percent of the survey process, EC pros have to be more aware than ever of the odd question. Here, two experts offer sample survey questions for the general EC tour.

1. Have you replaced roller latches where required? (Roller latches should have been replaced in 2006; surveyors may still look.)
2. How often do you check the firewall penetration?
3. How often do you check the dampers?
4. When exits are close to construction, are staff members educated regarding alternate exits?
5. Do you believe that security staffing is adequate for your facility?
6. Tell me more about your security system. Is it electronic?
7. If there is a fire, do locked doors release?
8. When locked doors release for a fire, what is your process to secure the area? Do staff cover the exits?
