Q& A: Drug management and Medical Decision-making

Emergency Management Alert, August 13, 2007

From HCPro's coding network comes this Q&A about drug management:

Q: Can you provide a clear definition of drug management in the emergency room (ER) setting as it relates to the medical decision-making (MDM) portion of an evaluation and management (E/M) service? If the physician prescribes drugs for an ER patient, can he or she receive credit for this?

A: Yes, the provider should receive credit as drug management is a risk under MDM. Anytime a provider stops, reduces, increases, changes, renews, or provides a sample of a prescription, you should give credit for prescription drug management.
Unfortunately, there is no regulation from CMS on prescription drug management. If you are looking for authoritative sources, I would suggest placing this question in writing to your local Medicare carrier.
