Asthma risks high among nurses

Nurses have one of the highest incidents of occupational asthma, according to a study appearing in The Lancet, July 28.

Exposures to sensitizing substances, respiratory allergens, and irritants from sterilants and disinfectants make nurses twice as likely to experience occupational asthma compared to the general population.

In addition to the nursing profession, the study identified printing, woodworking, agriculture/forestry, and cleaning as jobs presenting high risks of asthma.
