HHS provides $430 million to enhance emergency preparedness

In an effort to aid healthcare facilities' response to bioterror attacks, infectious diseases, and natural disasters that may cause mass casualties, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently announced $430 million in grants to states, major metropolitan areas, and U.S. territories.
HHS said that the overarching goal of the grant money is to improve the nation's medical surge capability. According to HHS, healthcare organizations will also use the money for the following:
- Interoperable communications
- Systems to track available hospital beds
- Advance registration of volunteer health professionals
- Planning for fatality management and hospital evacuations
