Home healthcare is one of the fastest growing U.S. industries, and safe working conditions have been challenging to evaluate and monitor because the varied environment, according to researchers from University of Massachusetts.

Bloodborne pathogens, specifically improper disposal of dressings or sharp medical devices, were the main occupational hazards, said the study, which appeared in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Other conditions leading to serious occupational hazards were violence in neighborhoods and homes, lack of workstations, heavy patient lifting, and high productivity demands.
