CDC offers disaster surveillance tools

Emergency Management Alert, June 25, 2007

During a disaster, is your organization using disaster-related mortality reports? The CDC recommends such reports to keep state health departments apprised of ongoing disasters.

The reports use a predetermined set of criteria (e.g. time frame, range) to report the number of deaths during a disaster, and rely on a wide variety of sources to collect the data. Organizations can often conduct such reporting more quickly than collecting death certificates, and that could mean government agencies can assess the situation and allocate resources more quickly.
