Emergency room death raises red flags

Emergency Management Alert, June 18, 2007

A woman who died from a perforated bowel after writhing in pain on the floor of a Los Angeles hospital for 45 minutes has caused a stir in the medical community and beyond.

The ordeal was captured on a hospital security camera, and is currently under investigation by the sheriff's department, including how the department handled two 911 calls in which witnesses pleaded for help for the woman, reported The Los Angeles Times.

The story raises a variety of questions, both ethical and procedural, ranging from how dispatchers handled the 911 calls to the conduct of emergency room workers to the alleged systematic failures that led to the death.
