Last week, Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, MA, began offering antibiotics to about 1,000 patients, family members, and healthcare workers who may have been exposed to whooping cough in the oncology clinic.

Three staff members at the medical center have been diagnosed with, or are exhibiting symptoms of, whooping cough, according to the hospital. The facility removed the workers from duty as soon as their conditions became apparent.

However, these staff members may have been contagious to others in the oncology clinic during the period between May 17 and June 6, the hospital said.

Children typically receive whooping cough vaccine as part of a routine series, though without follow-up booster shots, immunity in adults can decrease.
