Tampa (FL) General Hospital will receive a $3.2 million federal grant to help better protect the facility during a hurricane.

The hospital sits on a small island in a bay in downtown Tampa, which is a city frequently under the threat of hurricanes. The grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will cover 75% of the planned improvements, with the hospital covering the rest of the costs, reported the St. Petersburg Times.

The following activities will be included in the work:

  • Providing watertight doors
  • Replacing gravel rooftop coverings with flat roofing materials
  • Installing stainless steel mesh shutters to protect windows from flying debris
