The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) alleges that one of the largest U.S. manufacturers of hospital disinfectants made false claims about the effectiveness of its products against infection-causing organisms.
The EPA is seeking $202,500 in penalties against Lonza, Inc., of Allendale, NJ. "This company sold disinfectants that didn't deliver as promised, and did a disservice to doctors, staff, patients, and the general public," EPA Regional Administrator Alan Steinberg said in a press release.
The disinfectants that the EPA alleges are ineffective include the following:
- Formula 158 Lemon Disinfectant
- Fresh and Clean
- REV
Lonza is working with the EPA to resolve the issue, and the company questions the testing procedures the EPA uses to make their determinations about the products, Lonza said in its own press release.
Lonza has revised at least one of the claims on a product label and will meet with the EPA about the allegations, according to the agency.
