Defining an emergency

Emergency Management Alert, May 21, 2007

Have you ever been left wondering what a "proxy event" actually entails? Has the difference between a situation analysis and a situation assessment ever escaped you?

The field of emergency management demands quick thinking and even quicker reactions, but, at times, terms can fly faster than a plastic bag in hurricane winds, and not understanding the terminology others are using can be just as problematic as not knowing how to perform your job under pressure.

Fortunately, there is a resource that can help you out. The Institute for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk-Management (ICDRM) at George Washington University, with support from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Department of Veterans Affairs, has developed a glossary of emergency-related terms and definitions.

If you're not using it already, check it out here.
