The Joint Commission announced last week that extensive revisions to EC.4.10 (developing emergency management plans), along with minor changes to EC.4.20 (conducting emergency management tests), will go into effect on January 1, 2008.

It is expected that these two standards will expand to nine standards when the revisions roll out.

The accreditor hadn't posted the final revisions as of yesterday morning, though the draft revisions that went out for public review showed the elements of performance for emergency management quadrupling.

The revised EC.4.10 will key in on the following six areas during emergencies involving hospitals:

  • Communication during emergencies
  • Resources and assets during emergencies
  • Safety and security during emergencies
  • Staff members' roles and responsibilities during emergencies
  • Utilities during emergencies
  • Clinical activities during emergencies
