Last week's Hospital Safety Symposium brought safety officers from across the country to Las Vegas to share their experiences and learn at various education sessions.
One presentation that garnered reaction dealt with the Environmental Protection Agency's hazardous waste regulations. Speaker Steven Bloom, MS, warned attendees to keep up with required weekly inspections of areas that store hazardous waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.
"That is a very rigorous requirement" for hospitals, especially at satellite locations, said Bloom, a senior scientist at Environmental Health & Engineering, Inc., in Newton, MA.
