Georgia hospital beefs up ER security

Emergency Management Alert, April 30, 2007

The Houston Medical Center in Warner Robins, GA, is increasing security by hiring an armed city police officer to patrol its emergency room.

The officer will  patrol during the overnight hours, reported WMAZ-TV in Macon. The hospital's administrator said the hiring is an effort to be proactive and prepare for the county's growth as well as protect patients, faculty, and staff. The hospital currently employs security officers who do not carry weapons. The administrator said he hopes the presence of an officer equipped with a badge and gun will deter crime at the facility.
