Even small-scale incidents can test your ED's mettle
Emergency Management Alert, April 30, 2007
It's not every day that your ED must handle a massive influx of patients from a single crisis-nonetheless, preparing for such a situation is of paramount importance. Remember, under the right circumstances, even a relatively small-scale incident can test your preparedness.
Take the situation that unfolded at Albany (NY) Medical Center Hospital (AMCH) last week, when reports came back that multiple state troopers had been wounded in a gun battle with a fugitive. At first AMCH believed as many as four police officers had been wounded and were in route to the facility, according to The Albany Times Union, prompting a number of emergency measures to kick in. AMCH alerted the blood bank, put surgical specialists on alert, and diverted emergency traffic to other facilities, the Times Union reported, amid concerns that more officers would be injured as the incident unfolded. In the end, only one officer was treated at the hospital; another died at the scene of the shooting.
