When terror strikes, you must be prepared

Emergency Management Alert, April 23, 2007

When terrorist's bombs exploded on four Madrid commuter trains in March of 2004, the toll was staggering: 191 dead and more than 1,800 injured. The surge of victims at your hospital can come quickly, warns the CDC, particularly when explosives and high-powered weapons are the cause; in those bombings, one Madrid hospital had an influx of 272 patients in just 2.5 hours.

Just last week the CDC released a new document to help hospitals plan for such a contingency, entitled, "In a Moment's Notice: Surge Capacity in Terrorist Bombings." The CDC employed a group of experts to develop the content, and is providing it free of charge on their Web site, www.cdc.gov (under the topic "Mass casualties.") The document is designed to provide creative solutions to surge issues and addresses both system-wide and discipline-specific challenges.
