Panel will review emergency response in Virginia Tech shootings

Emergency Management Alert, April 23, 2007

Can emergency responders and healthcare providers learn lessons from the tragic shootings on Virginia Tech's campus on April 16? A panel of experts appointed by Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine, and which includes a professor of emergency medicine, will try to answer that very question.

The incident unfolded last week on Virginia Tech's campus in Blacksburg, VA. Thirty-two people were fatally shot by 23-year-old student Cho Seung-Hui, who turned the gun on himself before police arrived. As many as 28 people were sent to four different area hospitals during the emergency, some of them in critical condition.

The panel will engage in a wide range of analysis stemming from the shooting, including the effectiveness of emergency personnel. The governor selected Marcus L. Martin, assistant dean for the School of Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia and a professor of emergency medicine, to serve on the panel alongside a number of law enforcement and medical experts.
