The simple-looking N-95 respirator may not be as easy to wear as it appears a study in the May issue of Emerging Infectious Diseases says.

In "Respirator Donning in Post-Hurricane New Orleans," researchers observed more than 500 individuals in post-Katrina New Orleans and their ability to properly wear N-95 filtering facepiece respirators. The N-95 is also the respirator recommend for outbreaks of avian flu, pandemic influenza, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

The study reports that only 24% wore the mask correctly, while almost the same number, 22%, wore the mask upside down.

Incorrect usage of the mask compromises protection. The study said an emphasis on proper respirator usage should probably be part of epidemic planning efforts.
