The term "risk assessment" comes up quite often because Joint Commission surveyors invoke this idea under standard EC.1.10.
In fact, EC.1.10 was the eighth most problematic standard during hospital surveys last year, according to The Joint Commission. EC.1.10 is akin OSHA's general duty clause in that it allows surveyors to score various safety problems that other standards might not specifically address.
By conducting risk assessments, hospitals not only satisfy Joint Commission requirements but also take steps to strengthen their safety efforts, says Steven MacArthur, a safety consultant for The Greeley Company, a division of HCPro, Inc., in Marblehead, MA.
Risk assessment findings should formally be entered into the minutes of your safety committee meetings to establish a paper trail.
MacArthur will offer more advice about EC.1.10 at the upcoming Hospital Safety Symposium, presented by Briefings on Hospital Safety. The event is just two weeks away, taking place May 3-4 in Las Vegas.
