In the news: Former FEMA chief tells KU audience Katrina not his fault

Emergency Management Alert, April 10, 2007

Michael Brown is in the news again--this time for saying that the Bush administration turned a "deaf ear" to him when he tried to tell them, weeks before the onset of Katrina, that the Gulf Coast wasn't ready to handle the storm. He spoke at the Dole Institute at the University of Kansas April 2.

As part of his duties as FEMA director, Brown oversaw and managed more than 13,000 full- and part-time employees and the $12 million budget of FEMA, the National Flood Insurance Administration, the U.S. Fire Administration, the National Disaster Medical System, the Nuclear Incident Response Teams, the Domestic Emergency Support Team, the Office of National Security Coordination and the Office of International Affairs. He also served as the point person for the DHS' Investment Review Board and its $41 billion budget .
