Operating room nurses say that a majority of healthcare facilities in which they work still make available powdered gloves that present latex-allergy risks.

That finding was from a March 20 random sample of 822 operating room nurses attending the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses 54th Congress in Orlando, FL.

While 91% percent of respondents acknowledged that they believe glove powder to be an unnecessary risk for healthcare workers and patients, 59% confirmed that such gloves are provided and used where they work. In response to another question, 73% of those surveyed said that powder-free gloves were an essential component in creating a latex-safe environment.

The survey was conducted by surgical glove manufacturer Molnlycke Health Care, Norcross, GA.
